Colgate was founded by William Colgate in 1806, when he started a starch, soap and candle business on Dutch Street in New York City. In 1857, upon the death of William Colgate, the company is reorganized as Colgate & Company under the management of Samuel Colgate, his son. Violet water was first introduced in the 1900s.
